PRP & Shockwave Therapy Q&A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

PRP is a substance found naturally in your blood that contains essential growth factors that stimulate your body’s ability to heal damaged tissues from the inside out. The growth factors prompt your body to produce healthy, new cells to replace those damaged by injury or disease.

PRP is a treatment formulated from your own blood. Once the high platelet solution is created, Dr. Elhiani injects it directly into the ligaments, tendons, and muscles in your feet or ankles to reduce inflammation and help tissues heal more efficiently.

What conditions can platelet-rich plasma treat?

You might be a candidate for PRP therapy if you have persistent pain or mobility issues from foot and ankle conditions like:

  • Bursitis
  • Tendinitis
  • Neuroma
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Ligament strains
  • Muscle sprains
  • Tendon tears
  • Achilles Tendonitis

Dr. Elhiani physically examines your foot or ankle and may request X-rays or other diagnostic imaging tests to determine if you’re a candidate for PRP therapy. He may recommend this type of treatment if medications, physical therapy, and other nonsurgical strategies aren’t working.

PRP injections can also help you put off or avoid surgery for painful soft tissue injuries by harnessing your body’s ability to heal itself.

Eazy Foot & Ankle also offers extracorporeal shockwave therapy, a nonsurgical, noninvasive treatment to stimulate soft tissue healing. Delivering shockwave energy into injured tissues in your feet and ankles stimulates your body’s healing abilities to reduce inflammation and pain.

Dr. Elhiani may combine shockwave therapy with PRP injections to improve your treatment outcome.

What can I expect during PRP therapy?

During your PRP therapy appointment at Eazy Foot & Ankle, Dr. Elhiani draws a sample of your blood to prepare it for your treatment. He uses a centrifuge to spin the blood and separate the platelets from other blood materials.

The resulting high concentration of platelets are what Dr. Elhiani injects into your foot or ankle. To ensure he injects the PRP into the right location, Dr. Elhiani uses bluetooth ultrasound technology during your injection to guide the needle into place and maximize your outcome.

The entire process takes about 30 minutes. You can expect to go home soon after your treatment with minimal limitations.

While you may not see immediate results of your injection for a few weeks, PRP therapy can provide long-lasting pain relief and improve your mobility. It takes time for new cells to form, and many people begin seeing results within 4-6 weeks of treatment.
